Review: Den-O and K-Taros

Back in 2007, we were greeted with a very loud Rider... Momotaros!

Wait, that's not right...

Den-O!

OK so I admit, Momotaros did take over the Den-O mantle eventually, but in the beginning, there was Ryotaro Nogami, a quiet man who didn't want to cause no one bother. Thrust into the spotlight by a pushy Hana and his status as a Singularity Point, he takes up the fight against the Imagin!

To do this, he was given a Driver, simply known as the "Den-O Belt". Somewhat small compared to other Drivers, and very basic in operation, but pleasing none the less.

Accompanying the Driver is a "Rider Pass", this is used to Henshin, perform final attacks, and is a good place to store your "Rider Tickets".

In the series, passing the Rider Pass over the Driver grants you Plat Form, the most basic form of Den-O. However with the DX version, passing it over gives you a generic acknowledgement sound, and holding it in front gives you the basic Full Charge announcement.

There are 4 base forms with the Driver, each one represented by a different Imagin.

They are:
Momotaros  - Sword Form - Red
Urataros - Rod Form - Blue
Kintaros - Ax Form - Yellow
Ryuutaros - Gun Form - Purple
There is a 5th Imagin that decided to take a contract out with Ryotaro, however he requires a different belt. The 5th was Sieg, he offered Den-O the rarely seen Wing Form, shiny and gold with feathers!

Anyway, to Henshin into one of the four available forms, simply press the button and pass the Rider Pass over the front of the Driver. Or you could sit and listen to the jingle, they're all worth a little dance to :)
After you've Henshin'd, please refrain from throwing away the Pass like Momotaros does... they aren't that easy to come by!
To complete your Hissatsu, hold the Rider Pass in front of the Driver and wait for it to say "Full Charge", followed by flashy bang bang crash noises!

Congratulations, you just completed your introductory lesson on how to use the Den-O Driver!
Would you like to know more?

Sure you would!

As a special feature, we also have the K-Taros Cellphone!

This is used to access the super form, known as "Climax Form". This form actually has two versions, but the Henshin sequence is the same for both, one just has added Sieg, and wings!.

Styled after a classic (modern at the time) flip phone, the K-Taros Cellphone is black and red, with many buttons, and a see through display.

And horns.

No really, the Cellphone has horns.

The Phone can function independently from the Driver, with buttons to call the Imagin, summon Den-Liner, and even receives calls from time to time! (Roughly every 30 seconds or so). The calls, you can either answer, hang up or let it ring! Again it has quite a nice jingle to it, dancing is mandatory!

To call the Imagin, simply press a number, then the call button, simple right :D The sounds appear to be entirely random, so who knows which one will actually pick up.

Interestingly, the numbers spell the Imagin names, they're also colour coded to help if you can't read Japanese.
3-2-1 - Momo-Taro-S
6-5-4 - Ura-Taro-S
9-8-7 - Kin-Taro-S
#-0-* - Ryu-Taro-S

To summon the Den-Liner, press any number, followed by the train button. You'll hear the Liners horn in various forms.

Now for the main event! Climax Form!

Remove the silver edge on the Driver itself, this will let the Cellphone clip on to the front. There is a small hole to the side of the Den-O logo on the Driver, and a pin on the back of the Cellphones screen which lines up with it, this will change the sound set from the Driver while the phone is attached.

You can trigger Climax form in two ways, you can either call the Imagin, then enter Climax form with a jingle, or go directly to Climax, do not pass go, do not collect £200...

To call the Imagin, press 3,6,9,#, then the call button. The Cellphone will say "Momo-Ura-Kin-Ryu" then start the jingle. The jingle appears to go on forever, but that's not a bad thing :) When you're ready, if you haven't done so already, clip the phone to the front of the Driver, then press the button on the (now top) of the phone. Congratulations, you've now become Den-O, Climax Form!

Alternatively, press the button on the side of the phone to go directly to Climax Form. Effective, but nowhere near as entertaining!

For your Hissatsu, press the Den-O logo on the Cellphone, you'll hear an ominous sounding jingle that wouldn't be out of place on Gaoh's Driver!

Then simply pass the Rider Pass over the front of the Driver and Cell, you'll hear "Charge and Up" along with a charging like sound as your attack prepares, then delivers!

So there you have it, a brief, badly worded review on the joy that is the Den-O Driver and K-Taros Cellphone!

At 12 years old now, it's tech has been well and truly surpassed by later Drivers, but as they say, you can't beat a classic!
